Business groups have expressed their exasperation with the Government after the launch of the EU waste Electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Directive was delayed for a third time. The Directive is designed to ensure that all electrical and electronic equipment, from computers to toasters, is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Both the CBI and the FSB have spoken out about the possible damage to business caused by yet another delay. Although their members support the DTI’s decision to put proceedings on hold if it means the regulations are put in place properly, business groups claim that the uncertainty surrounding when the regulations will finally be introduced, and the questions about the final form the rules will take, is damaging to business.

Following the publication of the Turner Report at the end of November last year, there was the inevitable outpouring of opinion, conjecture and criticism regarding each and every aspect of the Pension Commission’s recommendations. The main focus of attention in the immediate aftermath was the raising of the State Pension age, but it is now the turn of the other key proposal of reform, the introduction of a National Pension Savings Scheme (NPSS), to take the spotlight. The Pension Reform Minister, Stephen Timms, invited key members of the financial services industry to give their opinions on the NPSS and present viable alternatives and, it is fair to say, they have not been shy in coming forward.

The Federation of Small Business, in association with The Credit Management Research Centre at Leeds University’s Business School and The Better Payment Practice Group, has announced that it has launched the 2006 Private Sector Payment Performance League Tables as an online database. The online tables, showing how the UK’s publicly quoted companies perform when it comes to paying invoices on time, will be updated on a daily basis. Despite encompassing over 5,000 companies, there were still 2,200 companies, including some of the UK’s largest names which failed to report the number of days they take to pay, in direct contravention or regulations.
